About Us

A Butchers Shop in Pett for 90 years

The Butchers Shop in Pett has operated continuously on this site since it was built by my great-uncle, Robert Whiteman, in 1934. He managed the shop until 1974.

The shop was then leased to other butchers until 2020 when it was returned to the family and taken over by me, Sarah Whiteman. I renamed the business “The Old Butchers Shop”.

Robert’s story, in his own words, is available in his memoir “The Butchers Block” – ask us for a copy when you visit.

We know exactly where our meat comes from

The Whiteman family has lived at a small farm close-by since 1919 and whilst these days we are more agricultural contractors, we have maintained strong links with other nearby farms – from where the majority of our produce is sourced.

Our objective since starting the business has been to provide good quality, local, sustainably-produced meat and produce – providing a connection between the consumer and the grower.

Locally-sourced meat and produce

All of our lamb, beef and free-range pork is bred, born and raised within just a few miles of the shop. For example, our lamb grazes on the marsh land Pett Level and Winchelsea. Everything is sourced direct from the farmers – with whom we have long-standing trusted relationships.

We also stock dairy produce from Northiam Dairy, locally-made fresh bread from The Bakery @89 in Rye and, when available, locally-grown seasonal fruit and vegetables. We also stock many locally produced products from jams & juices to chutneys and even curry sauce.

Sussex-produced, sustainable charcoal is also available to purchase for your BBQs or outdoor Pizza Ovens.

Farmers Markets

We have regular stalls at a number of local farmers markets, particularly in communities which have lost access to a local Butchers Shop. You will find us at Lydd, and Northiam on a monthly basis, selling pre-packed meats and accepting advance orders.

Home Delivery & Online Ordering

While many of the local village shops having been lost to time, The Old Butchers Shop has survived. Since its take-back in March 2020 the shop is stocking a greater range of produce than ever before.

Despite the challenges of starting a new business during a global pandemic, we quickly managed to set up a home delivery service and acquired a refrigerated van. We provide home delivery to the surrounding villages, as well as Hastings & St Leonards, and have just extended this to Rye, Northiam, Bexhill & Battle; together with the option to order online if that suits you better. We do not offer delivery by post.

Delivery is available to addresses within TN34, TN35, TN36, TN37 & TN38, for just £5.  We can also deliver to TN33, TN39 and TN40 on Tuesdays and TN31 and TN32 on Thursdays.

We pride ourselves on offering a bespoke customer service, tailored to the individual customer’s needs.

My small team and I look forward to seeing you in the shop soon.

Sarah
